In one of my previous posts about time management, I’ve mentioned that using my handy dandy planner is one of the things that I have in place to keep me sane – well, almost! With a breastfed toddler in tow, freelance gigs and a business to run, and a family to take care of, it may seem almost impossible for me to keep track of everything. Sure, I still forget a couple of things here and there, but, I’d never be able to get away with my day without having to take a quick glance at my planner.
Isn’t it old-fashioned?
Call me old-fashioned, but this system works for me – and it might just work for you too! Now, I know a couple of people who’d stick with their iCloud calendar and track everything from there. ‘Coz why not? It syncs with their phone, iPad and Mac(book). It’s the perfect way to get your reminders synced together. If that system works for you, congratulations! But if not, leaning towards the more traditional method of organizing things might just be something that you need to try out.
Why I Can’t Ditch Planners
There can be tons (yeah, tons) of reasons why I love planning, but I’ve enumerated some of the best reasons I could think of.
- It doesn’t run out of battery.
I know! It’s the new age – I should get a power bank, or just bring my charger with me everywhere I go. But as far as convenience goes, I like planning things without having to worry about my battery running out. With my toddler constantly using my phone to watch her videos, and take pictures, I wouldn’t really depend on my phone’s battery just to help me keep organized.
Sure, it has its disadvantages too, but I just love the fact that I can take it out from my bag, check my day schedule without having to worry about “has it been charged?”. One of the things I regret buying was an Apple watch. Sure, it’s functional. Don’t get me wrong, I love it! But, there are a lot of times that I wanted to use it, but end up wearing another watch because I forgot to charge it (ugh).
- I love how I can customize my planner.
I love, love, love the fact that I can create themed weekly spreads, and even customize my planner dashboard. If I’m feeling pink, I can use pink washis, stickers and inks. Why not? I can also add some inserts that will help me brighten up my day, inspirational quotes to help me keep going through the week, and oh, did I mention custom paper clips? They’re awesome!
- I’ve got plenty of space to write on.
Okay, again, I have nothing against people who are utiliing their phone apps. However, personally, nothing is more fulfilling than writing down my plans, goals and my feelings on a piece of paper. I’ve also got a lot of space to write, draw, or even scribble a few more notes – something that I won’t be able to do with my phone.
- My yearly goals, things to do, shopping lists, gifts, addresses, birthdays, notes all in one place.
Because I run a two businesses, getting my repeat customers’ addresses and information plays a crucial role in my line of work. I ship parcels, and I also make sure that I give a little bit of something to my beloved customers on their special day. My handy dandy planner allows me to store and retrieve these types of information without having to go through a lot of places.
- It’s relaxing!
Believe it or not, I find planning really relaxing. I usually do my weekly spreads every Sunday night. This gives me an overview on what I want to achieve for the week. It also gives me something to look forward to, and of course, helps me stay on track. Aside from businesses to run, I also have a couple of clients to handle, so I make sure that I use my time wisely! I have a daughter, and as much as possible, I wanted to spend every single minute with her. Which is why I schedule my tasks during afternoon naps after I do household chores, and after her bedtime.
How about you? Are you a #plannergirl? Let me know your thoughts! Let me see your weekly spreads and share ideas! 🙂 What do you think about using a planner for organization?
